Trails Under the Sun

10 Days

10 days full of runs, relaxation, recovery and freshly made traditional cuisines every day, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. Think of this as a time to fully immerse yourself in the running culture: a walk to the market to experience the Kenyan way of living, a scenic hike to some of the tallest waterfalls in Kenya, an evening around a bonfire with a drink as you wind down, or watching the sunset from the top of a hill overlooking the amazing views of Iten.
Every day will be filled with new experiences and adventures, but the core will remain the same: ensuring you get the most out of learning, interacting and running with Kenyan runners, as well as finding out what life looks like for them outside of running and how that feeds into why they are truly exceptional at what they do.
Every part of this journey will allow you to challenge yourself, create strong bonds with the group and enjoy everything Kenya has to offer.

This experience is designed for people who already run regularly and are comfortable being active day to day. A recommended 6:30/km at 5km distance or faster on flat ground. Some of our runs will take place at around 2,400m above sea level, so the altitude will naturally affect your pace and effort.

There will be a mix of trail runs, jogs, hikes, walks and hill sessions. All runs will be accompanied by pacers making sure no one gets left behind.
-
We would like you to be up for a challenge, especially running at high altitude. Check out our FAQs page for preparation tips but are optional to follow.

On arrival, you’ll be transferred to a hotel, where we’ll spend the night before heading to Iten for our Trails Under the Sun experience. We’ll start the trip with a welcome dinner at a local Kenyan restaurant, giving everyone the chance to meet, settle in and get their first taste of Kenya.
We will catch an early flight to Eldoret, settle into our accommodation, and ease into life in Iten with a short 5km jog. After lunch, we’ll take a relaxed walk around the village, giving you the chance to take in your surroundings, meet some of the locals and capture your first photos of Iten. If you’d rather take it easy, you can stay at the accommodation, go for a swim or simply enjoy the facilities. The evening is yours to spend as you wish.
We’ll have an early morning rise for our first proper run in Iten. This is a 10km run at your own pace, where the focus is more on the distance covered than how fast you run. It’s also our opportunity to get a feel for your pace and place you into the right pace group for the rest of the experience. We’ll visit one of our athlete's home. Here, we’ll learn more about what makes Kenyan athletes the greatest, from their daily habits to their nutrition. You'll witness and get a chance to prepare traditional Kenyan food and have the opportunity to try mursik, a cherished traditional Kalenjin fermented milk drink.
A day away from the trails and a chance to experience Kenya’s wildlife. We’ll head to Rimoi National Park for a relaxed mini safari, where we’ll explore the park and hopefully catch a glimpse of elephants roaming in their natural surroundings. There’ll be some light walking throughout the day, but no running or high-intensity activities. This is your chance to slow down, take in the scenery and give your body a well-earned break.
We’ll start the morning with a session of 100m hill sprints, with six repetitions and plenty of recovery in between. You’ll be guided by a professional coach who will take you through the session and adapt the drills to your ability. The afternoon is all about recovery and having fun. Including a team sports day potentially Kenyan runners who by now you would have probaly made one or two friends with.
Track training with hundreds of Kenyan runners, followed by an easy hike through Kessup Forest. Start the morning at the track alongside the local running community. You’ll see how Kenyan runners prepare for their sessions, take part in the training yourself and receive guidance from a coach. In the afternoon, we’ll head to Kessup Forest for an easy, scenic hike. Take in the breathtaking views, slow the pace down and spend some time in nature.
We’ll start the morning at Singore Forest with a trail run led by a professional Kenyan athlete. The session will involve stretches and a warm-up then head onto the trails for around 1 hour 45 minutes of running. Later in the afternoon, we’ll head out again for a 45-minute trail run through Kamariny Forest, with the changing landscape and sunset views making this one of the highlights of the experience! The evening is about recovery. Stretch, book a massage, relax and enjoy an early night before our final big run in Iten.
We’ll head to Moiben by 6am for a 20km route, alongside Kenyan runners who will pace and support the group. The run will be at a relaxed, conversational pace, with water provided every 5km. This is about challenging yourself, enjoying the route and sharing one final long run with the Kenyan running community. In the afternoon we'll visit the local market and running shops. Explore the wider culture in Iten. In the evening head to a local outdoor bar/restaurant in Eldoret for a traditional Kenyan meal, accompanied by music and good company. Our last night in Iten, it will be filled with more fun, games, music and great conversations and a few surprises!
We’ll start the morning with an optional sunrise recovery jog, giving you one last chance to enjoy the place where we’ve spent the week running, exploring and connecting. We’ll have our final breakfast and a chance to reflect on the journey. Before we leave, we’ll announce winners of our challenges with a Wenduni goodie bag up for grabs. After breakfast, we’ll say our goodbyes to Iten and transfer to Eldoret for our flight back to Nairobi. We will make our way to a hotel near the airport where you can spend the night or spend a few hours here whilst you wait for your international flight.
Today marks the official end of your Trails Under the Sun experience. If you’d like to extend your stay in Kenya, we’ll be more than happy to help you plan the next part of your adventure. Otherwise, your airport transfer will be organised, making your journey home as smooth as possible. This may be goodbye for now, but not for long. We hope to see you back in Kenya and experiencing more of it with us again soon!
